I’m Getting Smashed By Lower Belts & Feel Like I’m Not Improving

I’m Getting Smashed By Lower Belts & Feel Like I’m Not Improving

Have you recently hit a plateau in Jiu-Jitsu? Does it seem that, no matter how much you’re trying to learn and apply new techniques, you just can’t seem to improve?
You might be tempted to push yourself because of this. To train harder than you’ve ever trained before and to increase the number of mat hours… But here’s the thing – merely training harder isn’t the answer.

If you are a beginner in Jiu-Jitsu and often find yourself having a hard time keeping up with your training partners who have less experience and mat time, then there may be a more serious issue at hand.

Many BJJ practitioners tend to become way too focused on winning every round at the BJJ academy. This means that their ego is getting in the way of improvement and growth.

Ego can prevent them from leaving their comfort zone during training. They will always be using their ‘A Game’ and never putting themselves in bad positions or trying out new techniques.

As a result of this ego-driven BJJ path, they become resentful of “losing” a roll or a training session. Something as stupid as someone passing their guard is a catastrophe… What they need to realize is that even though the BJJ academy is not the ADCC finals or a tournament or fight for life or death.

In order to improve in Jiu Jitsu , it is very important that you make a constant effort to fix your mistakes, re-evaluate and constantly control your ego so that you are not letting it affect your progress.

Doing this can be difficult but it is important to do so, so that you can truly evolve your BJJ game to the next level. As long as rivalries between BJJ teammates remain healthy, then they can be positive as they will force the level of the academy to reach new heights. It is important that one does not let this BJJ rivalry take over their focus on learning the techniques being taught at the academy.

If you recognize any of these aspects of training in yourself, you should be sure to keep on working on refocusing and pushing yourself outside of your comfort zone in order for constant improvement to occur in your Jiu-Jitsu.
