IBJJF Worlds 2017: Meregali Dethrones Lo, Musameci Brings First Title To Non Brazilian In a Decade

Another IBJJF World Championships are behind us. The prestigious brazilian jiu-jitsu championship saw the first non american winner of a category since 2007!

While Buchecha asserted his dominance once more winning the double gold he’s cemented his place in history. Winning both his category and Absolute for the 5x time (compared to Roger Gracie’s 3). One of the interesting fights on his journey was the absolute finals against Leandro Lo. After much struggle Almeida defeated Leandro Lo with two advantages, after a 2×2 point score.

Elsewhere the talk of the tournament was Nicolas Meregali who managed to dethrone Lo in the finals of his division in his debut at worlds as a black belt.

Musameci became the 4th American to conquer the coveted champions title at IBJJF Worlds as a black belt. He’s had a tough road beating Doederlein, Ary Farias and ultimately Joao Miyao.

Andre Galvao proved what a power house he was once more leaving behind names such as Romulo Barral and Felipe Pena behind. Galvao defeated Flipe Pena 2-0.  Andre Galvao defeated GF Team’s pleasant surprise  Patrick Gaudio by decision after 2-2 on points. Patrick Guadio previously obliterated Romulo Barral’s foot with a toe hold but even though the Gracie Barra ace wouldn’t tap out he lost via ref decision as the score was equal when the time ran out.
