How To Spot a PED User in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu

Whether we like it or not, performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs) are prevalent in BJJ competitions worldwide. Over the years, I’ve trained globally and encountered teammates and competitors using PEDs, sometimes openly and other times covertly. Access to these drugs varies: in Western Europe, they’re expensive and harder to obtain, whereas in parts of Eastern Europe and developing nations, PEDs are more affordable and widely available.

While PEDs can provide short-term performance boosts, their effects come at a significant health cost. BJJ competitions typically lack robust testing; only the IBJJF mandates post-championship testing, primarily targeting black belt champions. Serious testing, if conducted, would be random and out-of-competition, curbing usage more effectively.

Mental and Physical Impact

My perspective on PED use aligns with wrestling legend Dan Gable: the mental edge gained through natural, rigorous training is irreplaceable. PED use indicates doubt in one’s ability, undermining true mental toughness. Physical signs of PED use are often noticeable during training. Athletes using PEDs show massive fluctuations in strength and physique, cycling between peaks of near superhuman capabilities and periods of fatigue and diminished performance. Health issues often accompany these changes, with some users experiencing severe acne, joint pain, or even hospital visits due to complications.

Key Physical Indicators of PED Use

Signs of PED use can be subtle or glaringly obvious. While no single trait confirms PED use, the following symptoms frequently appear in users:

  1. Acne and Greasy Skin: Persistent acne, especially on the back and shoulders, and greasy hair are common.
  2. Excessive Muscle Growth: Rapid muscle gain and extreme vascularity often stand out, especially in athletes without natural progression.
  3. Physical Imbalance: Enlarged upper-body muscles disproportionate to the lower body suggest targeted PED usage.
  4. Other Physical Changes: Enlarged jawline, thicker fingers, or sudden hair loss can all be side effects.
  5. Mood and Psychological Changes: PEDs influence the user’s psyche, often causing aggression, mood swings, or secretive behavior.

Health Risks

Anabolic steroids disrupt natural hormone levels, often causing a severe imbalance with wide-ranging health impacts. From liver damage and cardiovascular risks to irreversible changes in the reproductive system, the price of PEDs can be steep. The usage even affects interpersonal behavior, reducing social inhibitions and increasing aggression.

Spotting a PED user involves observing both physical and behavioral signs, but it’s critical to remember that PEDs compromise the true spirit of BJJ. While many athletes may view PEDs as a shortcut to success, the long-term effects—both physically and mentally—often outweigh any temporary gains.
