How To Spot a PED User in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: The Signs No One Talks About

How To Spot a PED User in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: The Signs No One Talks About

Performance enhancing drugs have become one of the worst kept secrets in modern Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. From local tournaments to elite no gi superfights, the conversation around steroids, testosterone, HGH, peptides, and other compounds is no longer whispered in locker rooms. It is discussed openly.

And for longtime practitioners, the signs are often obvious.

A veteran coach with 25 years on the mats, who has trained and competed against countless athletes over the decades, described seeing dramatic differences between natural athletes and those using PEDs. While no one can know for certain without testing, experienced grapplers often notice recurring patterns.

Why PED Use Is Common in Jiu Jitsu

Unlike many Olympic sports, testing in BJJ is inconsistent or nonexistent in most organizations. Add in the pressure to win superfights, the need to recover from brutal training volume, aging athletes trying to stay competitive, social media physiques and image pressure, and financial incentives for champions, and PED use becomes tempting for many competitors.

The Most Common PEDs Used in Jiu Jitsu

Testosterone, TRT, and Anabolic Steroids

This is the most common base drug.

It is used for increased strength, faster recovery, higher aggression and drive, lean muscle gain, and better endurance between sessions.

Signs often noticed include sudden body transformation after age 35, thick traps, shoulders, and neck, oily skin, severe acne on the back and shoulders, reddish or flushed skin tone, extreme confidence or irritability, and huge performance swings when on cycle compared to off cycle.

Trenbolone

Trenbolone is one of the harshest and strongest anabolic compounds.

It is used for massive strength increases, a hard and dry muscular look, and more aggression and intensity.

Signs often associated with it include a waxy or unnatural skin texture, constant sweating, strong body odor, a short temper, sleeplessness, and a very dense physique despite low body fat.

Human Growth Hormone

HGH is often used for recovery and physique enhancement.

Possible signs include enlarged hands, jaw, or midsection over time, faster healing, and an older athlete suddenly training with the pace and recovery of someone much younger. Some users also develop a puffy look despite being lean.

Erythropoietin

EPO is more common in endurance sports, but it is occasionally discussed in grappling circles as well.

It is used for better cardio and greater work capacity. The signs are harder to spot visually than with anabolic drugs.

SARMs

SARMs are popular with amateurs who want what they believe is a safer alternative to steroids.

They are usually taken for lean muscle gain, recovery, and cutting fat, but they can still cause hormonal suppression and significant side effects.

What Experienced Grapplers Notice First

1. Severe Adult Acne

One veteran practitioner recalled training with a man whose back acne was so severe that lesions bled through the gi during rolling.

That level of acne in adults, especially on the back, shoulders, and chest, is strongly associated with elevated androgen levels.

2. Strange Hormonal Body Odor

Many longtime coaches describe a sharp, pungent scent some athletes develop while on heavy cycles.

This is likely linked to increased sweating, overactive sebaceous glands, hormonal shifts, and changes in skin bacteria. It is not necessarily poor hygiene.

3. Sudden Strength That Feels Different

There is normal strong, and then there is enhanced strong.

Some users display crushing grips, explosive bridges, freakish squeeze strength, and the ability to repeat near maximal effort over and over again.

4. On Cycle Versus Off Cycle Personality Changes

A common anecdotal pattern is dramatic mood and energy changes.

On cycle, some athletes appear hyper motivated, aggressive, intense, restless, and unusually confident.

Off cycle, those same athletes can look flat, low on motivation, depressed, less driven, and far less interested in training.

5. Rapid Midlife Transformation

If someone goes from an average 41 year old dad body to a superhero physique in six months while training roughly the same amount, questions naturally arise.

Who Uses PEDs the Most in Jiu Jitsu?

While anyone can use them, some groups are commonly associated with PED use.

Masters competitors often turn to them in an attempt to keep pace with younger rivals. Professional no gi athletes face money and fame incentives tied to superfights and titles. Injury prone competitors may look for shortcuts to recover faster. Recreational lifters who also roll are another group, since gym culture often overlaps with grappling culture.

The Real Side Effects

PEDs are not magic. They come with real costs.

Steroids and Testosterone Abuse

Common side effects include acne, hair loss, infertility, testicular shrinkage, high blood pressure, elevated hematocrit, mood instability, liver strain with oral compounds, and a higher risk of heart enlargement and other cardiovascular issues.

Trenbolone

Common side effects include anxiety, night sweats, aggression, insomnia, cardiovascular stress, and libido dysfunction.

Human Growth Hormone

Possible side effects include insulin resistance, water retention, carpal tunnel symptoms, and organ growth risks over time.

SARMs

Potential side effects include testosterone suppression, elevated liver markers, and negative cholesterol changes.

Important Reality Check: You Cannot Know for Sure

No matter how suspicious someone looks, you cannot confirm PED use without proper testing.

Some natural athletes have elite genetics, severe acne naturally, incredible strength, excellent recovery, and naturally high testosterone levels. So accusations without evidence are reckless.

Why Many Natural Grapplers Still Win

PEDs can enhance physical attributes, but they do not directly give timing, technique, strategy, grip intelligence, composure, or tactical patience.

A technical black belt with smart pacing can still beat enhanced athletes.

The real issue is not that PED users exist. It is pretending they do not.

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has matured enough to have an honest conversation about enhancement, testing, health consequences, fairness, and long term athlete welfare.

Because while steroids may help someone dominate a six minute match today, they often extract a much bigger price later.
