How Much Will a BJJ Training Trip to Brazil Cost You?

How Much Will a BJJ Training Trip to Brazil Cost You?

Probably the most common question about staying in Brazil: How much does it cost? The main expenses are your flight and your stay. Next to that, you’ll also need to eat and have some fun. Let’s look at the flight first, and then at the different lifestyles and how much they will cost you.

Flight

The cost of your flight will depend a lot on both where you’re flying from and when you’re flying. Use sites like kayak.com, skyscanner.net, and www.google.com/flights to find the best deals. The more flexible you are with your dates, the easier it is to find cheap flights. Make sure you also include luggage as it’s becoming more common to book this separately. All in all, your flight should set you back between €500 and €1500 for a roundtrip.

Stay

Now that you’ve got to Brazil, there are three ways to go about living. Favela style, comfortable style, and luxury style. Let’s do some math with all three. We’ll use euros as the currency. Feel free to convert to your own currency by googling (e.g. “400 euros to USD”).

1.Favela style

Sleeping: In the gym (€500 p.m.)
Food: Make it yourself, meat, rice, and veggies are super cheap (€100 per month should be plenty). You will have to change your diet to a real Brazilian diet, some things that are cheap in Europe are expensive in Brazil. Oats and peanut butter are a bit more expensive for example. Meat, rice, potatoes, and beans are cheap in Brazil.
Recreation: Jiu jitsu tournament (€20-€50 registration), walking on the beach and drinking coconut water (€1 for a coconut). Add €100 just to be sure.
Total per month: €700

2.Comfortable style

1. If you want to have a place for yourself and eat out and party a bit, this lifestyle is for you:
Sleeping: Airbnb (€500-€1000 p.m.)
Food: Going out for lunch but still making most meals at home. Add €10 per day (€450 p.m.)
Recreation: Parties (€50 for a great night out, incl drinks and food), weekend trip (about €300 for a fun weekend). Add €500.
Total per month: €1700

3. Luxury vacation

If you’re going on a luxury vacation with a bit of training, this is the lifestyle for you.
Sleeping: Hotel will set you back about €2000 for a month.
Food: Eat out for lunch and dinner, go to more expensive restaurants (€1000 p.m.)
Recreation: Exclusive parties in SP, with bottle service (€100 a night), weekend trips with shopping (€500), rent a boat (€2000 per day). Let’s say €2500.
Total per month: €5500

Total costs

Brazil can cost you between €600 and €5500 per month depending on your lifestyle. That’s excluding your €500 to €1500 flight. That means with €1100 euros you can have a month-long training camp in Brazil. If you’re willing to live the favela lifestyle that is.
