Gracie Barra Expels Instructor & Attempts to Erase His Lineage—Sparking Major Controversy in the BJJ World

Gracie Barra North America has taken the extraordinary step of permanently expelling Michael Cashman from the organization and declaring his martial arts lineage within the system “formally ceased.” The decision follows an internal ethics investigation and has ignited fierce debate within the global Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) community about whether any organization has the authority to rewrite martial arts history.

The Dismissal

In official communications dated July 25, 2025 and August 20, 2025, Gracie Barra’s Safety, Ethics, and Compliance Team announced that Cashman’s affiliation had been terminated effective immediately.

The termination was sweeping: Cashman was stripped of all rights to act or claim any role within Gracie Barra—including as a school owner, instructor, coach, or student. He is also prohibited from teaching, training, or entering any Gracie Barra-affiliated school worldwide.

Perhaps most controversially, the organization declared that Cashman’s lineage within Gracie Barra has been formally ceased, effectively attempting to sever his martial arts genealogy inside the system.

The Ethics Investigation

According to Gracie Barra, an independent Ethics Council—made up of long-standing school owners unconnected to Cashman—reviewed the case. The process included interviews with witnesses, a review of documentation, and an opportunity for Cashman to present his side.

The Council unanimously concluded that Cashman’s conduct was “inconsistent with Gracie Barra’s ethical and operational standards.” On that basis, they recommended permanent dismissal and lineage cessation, which the North American leadership team accepted and enacted.

Cashman has been given seven days from official notification to file an appeal with any new evidence.

Why Lineage Cessation Is Explosive

In Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, lineage is sacred. It traces a practitioner’s instructors back to the art’s founders, forming a historical chain of knowledge that is considered permanent and immutable. While organizations can expel members or forbid them from using branding, they cannot erase the fact that someone trained under specific instructors and received belts along a recognized lineage.

By declaring Cashman’s lineage “ceased,” Gracie Barra has entered uncharted territory—attempting to retroactively sever a link in the martial arts chain. This move raises philosophical and cultural questions:

  • Can an organization truly erase martial arts history?

  • Does expulsion equal the end of a lineage, or is lineage bigger than organizational membership?

  • What precedent does this set for the future of BJJ governance?

Community Reaction

While details of Cashman’s alleged misconduct remain undisclosed, the unprecedented “lineage cessation” has already sparked debate across the BJJ world. Critics argue that while organizations can ban individuals, lineage is a matter of fact, not policy. Supporters of Gracie Barra see the move as a bold stand to protect the integrity of their brand.

What is clear is that this case sets a controversial precedent. Gracie Barra’s decision may reshape how martial arts organizations assert control over both their members and the very genealogies that define the culture of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
