Ffion Davies: “Many Times I’ve Wondered Will I Be OK If I Don’t Become A World Champion”

Ffion Davies is among the most elite Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu athletes in the world… And last weekend, she proved her worth yet again – this time by winning her very first IBJJF lightweight world championship title as a black belt!
However, the road to this sort of a success hasn’t been without bumps and obstacles. What’s more, Ffion often found herself doubting whether or not she would be able to do it:

Black belt lightweight world champion! There’s no way I can put it into words. This has been my life’s goal since I competed in the pyramid as a blue belt for the first time in 2015.
Many times I’ve wondered will I be ok if this doesn’t happen for me. And for a while I was convinced it wouldn’t.

She persevered nevertheless. By staying consistent in her training and effort, as well as by being surrounded with the right people – Ffion earned her goal:

I will never be the person who is perfect and never loses. But I will keep showing up and putting my heart on the line and finally it’s payed off.

There have been so many people who have helped me get here today. After a tumultuous 6 months I’ve found a team in Essential Jiu Jitsu – thank you for accepting me and believing in me and to JT Torres for coaching. It was so surreal to have my idol in my corner.
Thank you to my forever friends at East Coast Jiu Jitsu Academy; I will always root for you all no matter what, moving to Dublin changed my life. And thank you lastly to my parents who have kept unwavering faith in me, to my beautiful friends back in Dublin who’ve been my support system.
