Fabio Gurgel: “Through Jiu-Jitsu, We Build Better People For The World”

Fabio Gurgel’s “Alliance Jiu-Jitsu” team has been in existence for 30 years now and has accomplished a number of achievements along the way; among them, winning half of the 26 editions of the IBJJF World Championships. However, he isn’t most proud of those accomplishments… Rather, what makes him feel most fulfilled is the Alliance’s active participation of BJJ’s evolution.
Professor Gurgel shared the secrets to this success in a recent Instagram post:

It doesn’t matter what you do in life, whatever your challenge or your competition… What will determine your success are the people around you.
Yes, it’s not just up to you and you’re not as good as you might want to believe you are. We need people by our side – and whoever brings together the best people wins the game.

I would summarize our journey in these 30 years of history by saying that we were the best in bringing the right people together and making them dream our dream, that they make them our mission.
Do we always get it right? Of course not, we are all fallible in our analysis and choices and many people were left along the path of our history for different reasons and misalignments. On the other hand, others arrived and reinforced our convictions and so we continue to evolve.

He emphasizes that the Jiu-Jitsu the Alliance team promotes has its basis in building better people:

The Jiu-Jitsu idealized by our Master Jacare is based on taking care of people, that’s what governs our culture. Here, we teach our students to do it for themselves, not to complain about the world, not to find excuses for difficulties, but to understand obstacles as a path.
We do this in the only way we know how, through good example, of assuming mistakes, of knowing that we are not capable of everything but guaranteeing our best.

This is how we teach our students, this is how through Jiu-Jitsu we build better people for the world.
