Egyptian Greco-Roman Champion Assaulted by Thugs who Chopped off His Fingers

 

 

Abdel-latif Mohamed, an Egyptian Greco-Roman wrestling champion, was attacked north of Cairo after Friday morning practice. The attackers equipped with switchblades surrounded him and mutilated his hand.

The 22 year old was subsequently hospitalized.

Local reports suggest that his fingers were chopped off however the extent of injuries has yet to become public. His father confirmed that his index and middlefingers were removed before the stabbing.

“Abdel-latif Mohamed, champion of the world and the champion of Africa in Greco-Roman wrestling, was attacked by thugs in the street close to the popular shops in the city of Dakahlia. He is so famous here that they beat a hero!“ said Abdel-Latif’s father.”They stabbed my son after he finished training, and assaulted him with a switchblade and cut his index finger and middle in his left hand. The doctor underwent surgery that lasted about 5 hours.”

Abdel-latif has been forced to withdraw from the 2018 Africa Wrestling Championships. The event is scheduled to begin on February 7 in Nigeria.

Last year, he finished 10th at the Wrestling World Championships.
