Eddie Cummings Started BJJ at 26 And Changed His Whole Life For The Gentle Art

Some liken a profession to a calling and it was certainly just that in case of Eddie Cummings. Two time EBI victor started bjj at the ripe old age of 26.

This mirrors some other champions who have started late such as Cobrinha (who started at 21), Demian Maia who reportedly started at 19 (although he had other martial art experience prior) and one of the best coaches around John Danaher started at 28.

Unlike some of the gentlemen mentioned above Eddie wasn’t un-athletic but he wasn’t involved in sport per se at the time he started jiu-jitsu.

In fact after a prolonged period of training like a professional while actually working and teaching Eddie decided it was time to step up and do his best. One other bit about him you may not know is that he played poker professionally for a bit.

One unique thing that separates Eddie from many successful competitors is that he’s still trully a jiu-jitsu fan at heart. This is one striking characteristic that can be observed from his interview. And according to him it was the one thing that needed some tinkering with in order to success against other high level grapplers.

One critical point discussed is at what point exactly do you decide to go pro and basically reorder your entire life in order to support this certain playstyle. Eddie credits his losses to Enrico Cocco and Vagner Rocha for deciding to go pro.

He is unique in one more regard, he boasts about watching an enormous amount of tape. He doesn’t shy away from analyzing his opponents.

While John Danaher has been promoting his dvd left and right, his student Eddie Wolverine released the first clip from his much awaited Leglock instructional from Digitsu.

The Wolverine is finally here! Eddie Cummings and Digitsu came together to film an extremely candid and eye-opening seminar focusing on the mechanics of the Ashi Garami – Leg Entanglement System. The objective of this seminar is to provide the students an immediately usable understanding of both the submission side and the escaping side of the Ashi Garami. Eddie’s breakdowns are extremely detailed and methodical. If you are looking to get a deeper understanding of the Ashi Garami – Leg Entanglement System, this is the place for you.
