Division 1 Wrestling Champ & MMA Fighter Ed Ruth Competed At Pans

3x NCAA Division 1 wrestling champion Ed Ruth opted to compete this year at Pans. Ruth is an American mixed martial artist and former freestyle wrestler. While competing for Pennsylvania State University, Ruth became a three-time NCAA collegiate wrestling champion (2012-2014). He is currently ranked number 2 at 189lbs in the United States.

His MMA record stands at 2-0 and he’s currently signed at Bellator. Ed Ruth managed to come in 2nd in his blue belt weight category over at pans:

“Took second at the Pan Ams, not the color I wanted it to be, but I still had a great experience.”

“Doesn’t feel too different than wrestling. It definitely feels a lot different being on the mat and not having shoes. Whole different grip factor. But overall I feel pretty good.”

Ed added: “I’ve been doing gi (bjj) off and on for a while now and then when I came up to the throne, I’ve been doing it a solid 8 months. ”

When further prompted about gi training he said: ” It’s allright, I’m not too crazy about it. Being a wrestler you move around a lot more freely. The gi is kinda heavy. Once you start sweating it gets to the end of the day. You’re tired, exhausted and you carry around a gi. That’s about an extra 6 pounds. I’m not gonna say I’m crazy about it but it definitely helped my game in some areas too. “
