Derrick Lewis Earns First Stripe On His Blue Belt in BJJ After Victory over Oleinik

After defeating Aleksei Oleinik by TKO earlier this month, Derrick Lewis fight declared that he’s “one of the baddest blue belts in Texas.”

Lewis’s BJJ instructor Joe Murphy of Renzo Gracie Houston decided to reward his student with the first stripe on his BJJ blue belt.

Murphy said:

“I’ve had the privilege to work with @thebeastufc for his last 2 fights and am very proud of the progress he’s made and the effort he’s focused on improving his grappling. We’re just getting started! I have no doubt that this man is a future UFC heavyweight world champion.”

Just like Lewis, the now former UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones was promoted to purple in BJJ by his instructor Roberto Tussa Alencar late last year after dominating the UFC light heavyweight division for 10 years.
Jones was a blue belt from July 2017 to now. He regularly trains in the Gi at Gracie Barra.
