Derek Moneyberg has once again ignited controversy in the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world after revealing the staggering amount he claims to have spent – around $3 million – on private training to achieve his black belt.
Appearing on the Overdogs podcast alongside Mike Perry, Moneyberg delivered an unapologetical defense of his fast-tracked progress:
I spent millions of dollars.
I spent about $3 million paying for coaches…I had the best damn coaching team in the world.
That team, according to Moneyberg, included a who’s who of combat sports icons: Andrei Arlovski, Jake Shields, Paulie Malignaggi, and even Royce Gracie and Lyoto Machida – names that add both legitimacy and fuel to the debate.
Moneyberg earned his black belt in just three and a half years, a timeline typically unheard of in traditional Jiu-Jitsu circles, where even elite athletes often train for a decade or longer to reach that milestone.
His claim has drawn fierce backlash from practitioners who see the achievement as something to be earned through mat time, not money.
Unmoved by the criticism, Moneyberg fired back with his trademark bluntness:
Would it be easier for me to bribe 50 professional fighters, 25 or so world champions?
Would it be easier for me to bribe those people to lie about me and say that I’m a black belt?Or would it be easier for me to just do training and get my black belt?
The controversy escalated when podcast co-host Mac compared his rapid promotion to that of Mark Zuckerberg, who has trained for a similar period but remains a blue belt and has even competed in local tournaments.
Moneyberg’s response was characteristically dismissive:
I don’t give a f**k what you think.
Moneyberg insists his focus has never been about competition or public validation:
I know what I did and my coaches know what I did.
If I didn’t invite somebody over here to ask for their opinion, if I didn’t invite them to train with me, then I didn’t value their opinion too much.
