Demian Maia Is All Class, Honored by GSP Call Out But Wants Title Instead

Demian Maia is riding high after his brilliant victory over Carlos Condit. It seems like the best is yet to come. Submitting The Natural Born Killer in the first round makes Maia’s 6th straight win.

On the other hand former welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre is looking to go back to the octagon ever since the UFC announced it’s partnership with USADA. He’s thrown his hat in a number of rings but most recently – into a fight with Maia.

“Tyron Woodley, I would fight Tyron Woodley. Nick Diaz. Maia, looked pretty good in his last fight. These guys can elevate me,” he said. “They are not guys that I’m necessarily supposed to beat. So it’s a big risk, but I’m willing to take the risk because these guys are going to elevate me.”

This is what GSP told Daniel Cormier at UFC on fox. Dana White of course questioned GSP’s motivation and ultimately the will to go back into the ring but from the interview it seemed like it’s a matter of money negotiations more than anything.

“To get far in this game, it’s not about the guy who has the biggest ‘balls’ so to speak. Sorry for the word, but it’s not about that. It’s not a straight line. You need to know who to go to be able to elevate yourself. That’s what I’m trying to do.”

To this Maia responded:

“I’m honored that he mentioned my name because he’s a legend,” Maia told MMA Fighting. “He’s maybe the only fighter to leave as champion. He’s one of the best, for sure, alongside Anderson (Silva). I consider Anderson the best of all time, but he’s definitely the No. 2. But my goal is to fight for the title. I want to fight for the title. After that, it would be a pleasure to fight him or anyone else. If everything goes according to my plans, I’ll come out as champion and then I can fight him next.”
