Defeating Drugs: 5 Meditation Techniques for Quicker Addiction Recovery

Meditation has several benefits when it comes to addiction recovery. If you are in rehab or have just come out of treatment, meditation can help you control the relapse of addiction.

But why should you trust the practice? Let’s get down to the technical details.

Meditation helps you arouse your conscience and increases the alertness of your subconscious self.

When you practice meditation religiously, your self-control improves. Your conscious and subconscious selves think on the same lines. Meanwhile, random triggers, stress and depression, and related issues take the back seat too.

In lengthy rehabs, meditation is an organic treatment technique. In most rehab days, it is also required. But the process might not be as simple and easy. There are multiple types of meditation. Keep reading to know which type suits you and your addiction level:

Types of Meditation for Addiction Control

Meditation has numerous types. Some days back, I wasn’t aware of the various niches of meditation either.

When I was researching the intervention structure of schedule “H” drug addicts, I realized meditation can be a targeted treatment approach.

Drug addiction is a common problem worldwide. So, a lot of sufferers want to access addiction recovery resources, which are easy to follow and implement.

First, I will tell you about the 6 meditation genres. These are:

  1. Buddhist Technique
  2. Hindu Technique
  3. Sufi Technique
  4. Chinese Technique
  5. Guided Technique
  6. Christian Technique

# All techniques May Not Be Right for You

Meanwhile, the Buddhist technique focuses more on mindfulness. Also known as the Vipassana meditation, this approach is best for people who have been released from rehab soon.

Next in line are the Hindu techniques. This form uses the mantra meditation. In other words, chanting in the Hindu technique involves chanting “Ohm” or “I am”. It’s easy, and the best part is that you can easily reach the transcendental stage.

The next one is the Sufi technique. It is considered one of the most difficult meditation processes. Here, you have to control your breathing to reach a stage of focus! Experts say that this meditation technique is better for personal hygiene and discipline.

The Chinese technique and Guided Meditation techniques are also popular among rehab returns. If there’s one hardest technique in the lot, it is this one. The Chinese technique rests on visualization and breathing control at the same time.

The most technically updated meditation is the Guided Meditation technique. It includes guided imagery, body scans, and relaxation, other than binaural beats and affirmations!

Lastly, there is the Christian technique. It is the same as contemplative prayer, where you silently sit with God. The technique also involves contemplative reading.

Now, the question is- which technique is usually used in rehab centers for better results? Well, there are no particular ones. Based on these meditation philosophies, your rehab doctor will suggest a meditation therapy that is best for you!

# The Meditation techniques For targeted Addiction Recovery

These 4 addiction recovery techniques are based on the recovery needs of addiction victims. Check out why these techniques are popular. Try to relate these techniques to the philosophies discussed above:

Meditating For Mindfulness

It is one of the most common techniques. At least 44% of the rehab centers follow this approach for better results with medications. Therapists in rehab centers also say that you can simply treat someone at their early stage of alcoholism with mindfulness meditation only.

This is also considered the most common type of meditation. Here’s how it’s done.

First, you’re asked to focus on what you are feeling in this moment. When you do that in repetition, you become more conscious of the surroundings.

The next step is self-revelation. After growing awareness, it’s time to disclose your true feelings, perceptions, and sensations.

Here’s the trick. Don’t hide or suppress your inward feelings. Just let them out. As you are aware of what’s bugging you from within, you will learn to embrace it. Therefore, you will gradually feel less urge to resort to drugs or alcohol.

Your body and mind will learn to fight eccentricity. Finally, you will also be able to fight negativity by yourself and control negative thoughts at will. However, the process is not easy. You need months of rigorous practice.

Breathing Meditation

The process may seem simple. However, you need to be on top of self-control to champion the process. The process may seem much simpler. Here, you have to focus on your breathing closely. As you grow old with the practice, you have to be on top of your attention when you are meditating.

Experts say that at a certain stage, you will be able to perceive the whole process of breathing in and out.

Mantra Meditation

In the case of mantra meditation, your process becomes even simpler than the other techniques. Here you have to do just one thing. You select a phrase, word, or sound. While meditating, you just spell it out or keep reiterating the sound in your mind.

The speech fragment is the “mantra” in the mantra meditation. You can chant, hum, sing, or speak it. But you may ask- how does this simple technique slow down your mind and help you process the brain functions?

That’s easy. The utterance of the mantra keeps you away from negative thoughts. It lets your brain gain control of the way you think and process information. In other words, control shifts to a great extent from the subconscious to the conscious brain, which you directly control.

Transcendental Motivation

It is a natural and quite simple technique. However, it is better to do this under the intervention of your rehab instructor. The best recovery centers organize regular guided motivation sessions.

But what is the process in reality? Well, it is a simple technique where you utter a phrase or a word silently. But your instructor chooses the speech based on your attributes or your traits. When you practice this form, you gradually sink into a deep meditation state. Meanwhile, you find inner peace as well!
