Davi Ramos Offers Advice For Beginners, Gives His Take On Berimbolo

Davi Ramos forged his reputation on impressive offensive moves. He remains one of the highlights of ADCC 2015 that was held in Sao Paulo, Brasil.

But as he prepares for his August set MMA match, Ramos took a break to offer some valuable insight to all beginners:

“When you first start training BJJ the first impression you get is that you won’t be able to make it.” – Ramos continued “Due to the fact that you’re looking at positions you will have to repeat many times.”

Repetition seems to be the key factor:

“Because you have to repeat them so much you will need to train a lot. “

His advice to beginners?

“Knowing that it’s hard I advise you not to give up on training, to persist in your training, to push through the day-to-day pain. However, you will return to the gym and see the results.” He explains ” The position you’ve trained so much will come up in real practice so the most important thing is not to quit. “

It’s no secret Ramos is an explosive athlete  – his most widely known success came via the most beautiful finish award for that amazing flying armbar in the Grand Finale of ADCC against Lucas Lepri.

He shared some insight into just how he drills:

“I practice a lot of speed based drills however when I want to perfect the adjustment of the position, I do the position slowly with fewer repetitions and much tighter. As if I were fighting, but just doing that position. “

He adds that in his mind there are two different types of drills.

“There are people who play old-school BJJ and do very well – as a matter of fact it’s all about the way you train. In truth, BJJ is evolution so even the one who only does basic positions is evolving as he trains. New positions will pop up and you will get your game to evolve. I can’t tell you it’s one or the other.”

Ramos goes on to give a suggestion:

“If you practice old school BJJ then start doing new positions  but I won’t recommend doing the berimbolo – that’s my personal choice. There’s a personal choice of each athlete with their own style.”

Ramos assigns great importance to prevailing a cooler head before stepping onto the mat. In the clip below he talks about all of the above, his idols and shows a very cool X Guard pass. Take a look:
