Cris Cyborg: How to Counter Someone Jumping To Closed Guard in BJJ

Former UFC and Invicta world champion Cristiane Justino aka Cyborg was promoted to black belt in BJJ by the legendary Rubens Cobrinha Charles a few years back.

Cyborg has been training BJJ and grappling for around 20 years. Cris was a world purple belt champion a few years ago.
Early in her career, she also competed on Wrestling back in Brazil.
In this Wrestling competition back in 2007, she faced world class wrestler Aline da Silva (world wrestling silver medalsit) and beat her.

According to Jiu-Jitsu world champ, Rafael Mendes, who has has the chance to train with both Cris and Ronda Rousey in the past, Cyborg has a better ground game than Ronda Rousey.

“When I was with Ronda, the training was more standing. Her ground is very good. She knows the ground, but it is not that modern, efficient Jiu-Jitsu. Ronda is more Judo fighter. Cris knows Jiu-Jitsu, she has won the Worlds (At purple belt), her skills are more modern and her Jiu-Jitsu is sharper and she trains with André Galvao. In an MMA fight it’s different, it’s hard to say who would win. But in Jiu-Jitsu, I think Cris has more options. ” Said Rafa in an intervview with Tatame.

Cyborg on her black belt promotion after 8 years at brown belt:

“8 years as a brown belt in BJJ and today I received the honor and privilege to call myself a @cobrinhacharles Brazilian Jiu Jitsu black belt. 🙏 thank you to all the coaches who’ve helped me evolve from an athlete into a martial artist.

BLACK BELT IS JUST THE BEGINNING OF A NEW JOURNEY

#gratitude.”

In this video, Cyborg shows how to counter a BJJ player jumping into the closed guard:
