Claudio Calasans & Yuri Simoes On The Importance of Their Judo For Their BJJ Game

Written by Andre Sato (Judo black belt and BJJ brown belt from Brazil) for BJJ Eastern Europe.

Nowadays Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu training level is very high, however, few people work on their stand up tool box. Throws are part of the game, should be worked and one of the best alternatives is judo.

With bjj global difusion, mainly because of the “brazilian black belt exodus”, the sport today has a really high level. Initially, Gracie Family members brought their art to USA, now many foreign formed by brazilians keep spreading it.

A bjj aspect that even nowadays isn´t worked properly are the take downs. It´s a point that can not be denied due to the points as well as the fact that it may let the person pick between pass or play guard.“The athlete who has the stand up game may pick where the match up goes and surprise the oponent in the tatical aspect.”, states European midle weight champion Claudio Calazans.

In Brazil there´s no “wrestling or Sambo Culture” as in USA or Russia although there is a strong judo tradition because of the japanese imigration.

The judo that may help bjj has posture, break grip and projections adapted to its rules.

“Certainly judo can help in bjj with the grip, base and throws, who would not like to begin with two points ahead?”

Asks the European heavy weight champion Yuri Simoes.

“Each detail make diference in competition and takedowns are a step further, it is not just about points but also to not be swept due to base improvement.”

Says Calasans.

“If you know how to throw you have an extra weapon!,”

Concludes Simoes.
