Can’t Hold Back Mount? Then You Should Do This

Passing the opponent’s guard and taking their back is hard enough. But maintaining that newly established back control can be even tougher; especially for those BJJ athletes who don’t have a lot of mat time under their belt.
So, if you haven’t been doing it already, you should invest some extra time into practicing your Back Mount control. You ought to try out different approaches to it, such as this unorthodox one shown by Nick “Chewy” Albin!

 

UNORTHODOX WAY TO MAINTAIN BACK MOUNT 

What’s one of the first things you’re taught when it comes to keeping Back Mount? All the way when you were a white belt? That’s right: getting your hooks in and using them to keep your training partners stuck in place.
However, what if we were to tell you that you don’t have to keep your hooks in place in order to keep the back under your control? Well, that’s what Chewy has got to show you.

Namely, if you have the training partner’s back on the side that your bottom seatbelt arm is against their neck and your top arm is underneath their armpit, they could escape your back control by escaping with their hips first.
Therefore, in order to stop that from happening, you’re going to position your top leg underneath the training partner’s knee. That is, you’ll stop using it to control the hip; and you’ll “circle” it around to their knee. Straighten this leg out and curl your other leg into their bottom hip.
