The controversy surrounding Atos founder Andre Galvão has reached a major legal turning point, as authorities in San Diego have declined to pursue charges following an investigation into allegations made by former student Alexa Hurst.
The case, which sent shockwaves through the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world when it first surfaced, led to intense debate, internal fallout within Atos, and widespread discussion about accountability, gym culture, and leadership in the sport.
What Happened
The situation began when Alexa Hurst, a former Atos student, publicly accused Galvão of sexual abuse. The allegations quickly gained traction online and within the BJJ community, leading to strong reactions from athletes, coaches, and fans.
In the aftermath, several members reportedly distanced themselves from Atos. The team faced internal disruption and reputational damage. The story spread far beyond Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu and reached a wider audience.
Galvão and his team denied the allegations from the beginning, stating that they would cooperate fully with any investigation.
U.S. Investigation and Outcome
According to an official statement released by Galvão’s legal representatives, the case was investigated in the United States and ultimately did not result in charges.
Authorities in San Diego reviewed the case after a police investigation and concluded that there was insufficient evidence to support criminal prosecution.

Full Official Press Release
Below is the full statement issued by Galvão’s legal team:
OFFICIAL PRESS RELEASE
The office Hueso & Andrade Advogados Associados, as representative of Mr. André Galvão in Brazil, comes to the public to provide the following clarifications:
As is public knowledge, a serious accusation was made against Mr. André Galvão by a former student. Faced with such allegations, Mr. André and his family promptly sought legal guidance in Brazil and the United States, collaborating fully with the competent authorities for the proper investigation of the facts and the clarification of the truth.
The investigations were conducted by the San Diego Police Department and forwarded to the local Prosecutor, accompanied by Lawyer Dr. Earl, as usual. After careful investigation, the U.S. authorities concluded that there were no elements capable of supporting any type of criminal imputation, and the case was formally filed. The complaint was therefore unfounded and without any evidence.
In Brazil, likewise, there is no formal accusation before the Judiciary. André Galvão continues with a clean record, primary and with good background, both in Brazil and abroad.
We deeply regret the wear and tear caused to Mr. André, to his family and ATOS, an institution that has dedicated itself so much to building, for accusations that, submitted to the competent authorities, proved to be devoid of any foundation. The wide dissemination of these narratives, even before any investigation was concluded, hurt the presumption of innocence of a citizen whose story deserved to be heard before being judged.
And precisely in defense of this constitutional guarantee, and of each person who has it, the Hueso & Andrade Advogados Associados office reaffirms its commitment to the seriousness and care that each fact deserves. Those who irresponsibly offended the image and honor of Mr. André, his family and team must answer equally before justice.

Impact on the BJJ Community
Even with the legal case now closed in the United States, the impact of the allegations has already left a mark on the sport.
The Atos team, one of the most dominant and influential academies in modern Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, experienced internal turbulence during the height of the controversy. The situation led to athlete departures and distancing from the team, as well as ongoing debates about leadership and gym culture.
Legal Closure vs Public Debate
While the decision by San Diego authorities effectively ends the case from a criminal standpoint, it does not necessarily close the discussion within the community.
Cases like this often exist in two parallel realities. One is the legal outcome, determined strictly by evidence and prosecutorial standards. The other is public perception, shaped by opinion, emotion, and incomplete information.
With no charges filed and the complaint described by the defense as unsupported by evidence, Galvão’s legal situation appears resolved in the United States. However, as seen in similar high profile situations, the conversation within the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu world is unlikely to disappear anytime soon.
