BJJ Practitioner is Main Suspect in Jan Kuciak Double Murder That Brought Down The Slovak Government

7 months after the murder of journalist Jan Kuciak and his fiancee Martina Kusnirova that brought down the Slovak government, Slovakian police have detained a prime suspect of the murder.

According to local media reports, the main suspect is Tomáš Szabo of Kolářovo. The police detained him in a house where he lives with his parents. Tomas is about 40 years old without children. In the past he worked as a police officer. Then he worked as an armed guard on the ships defending against Somali pirates..

He attended a bodyguard course at the European Security Academy. He is an avid Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioner, a spor that he has been training for over a year and he recently attended a Xande Ribeiro seminar in Slovakia over the summer:

Journalist Jan Kuciak, who had written about political corruption in Slovakia, was found shot dead along with his fiancee Martina Kusnirova at their home outside Bratislava in February. They were both 27. Kuciak worked as a reporter for the news website Aktuality.sk, focused mainly on investigating tax fraud of several businessmen with connections to top-level Slovak politicians.

The murders caused shock and disbelief throughout the country, sparking mass popular protests and a political crisis. The crisis culminated on 15 March with the resignation of Prime Minister Fico and his entire cabinet.
