BJJ Pioneer Grandmaster Álvaro Barreto Passes Away At 84

The BJJ community has lost one of its most significant historical figures – Grandmaster Álvaro Barreto, a 9th-degree red belt and direct student of Hélio Gracie, passed away at the age of 84.

Born in Rio de Janeiro in September 1941, Barreto began training at just 10 years old after his older brother, João Alberto Barreto, brought him to the Gracie Academy, where he trained directly under both João Alberto and Hélio Gracie.
He advanced quickly, and by age 17 was already teaching at the academy.

Barreto’s pursued formal education in Physical Education and incorporated that background into his teaching, developing a broader framework that combined technique, self-defense, competition, and education.

In 1967, he played a key role in founding the Jiu-Jitsu Federation of Guanabara alongside Hélio Gracie, João Alberto Barreto, Hélcio Leal Binda, and Oswaldo Fadda, an organization that helped transform Jiu-Jitsu in Rio de Janeiro from informal practice into a structured sport with defined rules and organized competition.

The following year, he opened Academia Corpo Quatro in Copacabana, which became one of Rio’s traditional Jiu-Jitsu schools.
There, he helped train a new generation of instructors, including Sylvio Behring, Guilherme Machado, and Wagner Cardoso, students who would go on to spread his teachings across Brazil and internationally.

Among his most notable students was Grandmaster Sylvio Behring, who trained under Barreto from a young age before developing his own teaching methodology.
Through that lineage, Barreto’s influence extended to athletes and instructors across multiple generations, including internationally recognized figures like former UFC champion Fabrício Werdum.

Over the course of his career, Barreto personally awarded roughly 20 black belts and took part in promoting hundreds of practitioners through the ranks.
