BJJ Academies Will Need To Adapt & Evolve in Post-Virus Life

The current COVID-19 situation in the world is a very serious one; people are getting sick, oftentimes critically, and countries are attempting to fight the disease by going through extreme lockdown procedures. These procedures have, unfortunately, changed the BJJ landscape as well – the academies are closed and training has, for the most part, come to a sudden stop.

As the coronavirus continues to spread, fitness & Martial arts gyms around the country are shutting their doors and adjusting to a new reality.

The fitness industry which includes Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academies, is most exposed to coronavirus-related revenue

BJJ instructors and gym owners should start preparing today for the reopening days. We will be approaching days of a new normal, with new habits – especially for those who train grappling.

Collaboration and awareness of each team member

All members of the academy will need to respect and enforce all the new habits. All students who have a fever, cold , ringworm, any disease will need to stay home so as not to infect their training partners.

Adaption of toilets and changing rooms.

A useful measure to avoid physical contacts and infections from dirty hands is the adoption of sensor taps, replacing the current manual ones. The increase in frequency, care and hygiene will also be done by a round the clock cleaning team.

Special area for shoes and slippers

Gyms will have to create an at the entrance to leave shoes to prevent dirt from the street from coming on to the mats. It should therefore be mandatory for everyone to leave their shoes at the entrance of the gym and change to a clean flip flops.
It should also be mandatory to wear slippers inside the academy, from the locker room to the mat.

Alcohol gel available

It is important to have containers with alcohol gel available in all areas of the gym.

Measuring temperature of all students who enter the gym

The gym should enforce measuring the temperature of the students with electronic thermometer before entering the academy.

Smaller classes

When returning to training, classes should be shorter and with less people. The academy should offer more for greater distribution and lesser number of practitioners at the same time. Another plan that seems crucial to us is to adopt a larger gap, about 30 minutes, between the hours of one class and another, to offer more time for people to leave before the next class enters, avoiding unnecessary crowds. ”

No more drinking fountains

In order to avoid students bending over to drink directly from the drinking fountain, which ends up being less hygienic, due to sweat and saliva, there will be no more drinking fountain. Everyone will be responsible for bringing their own water bottle.

Measures for air circulation, bigger windows

Academies should open the windows or build bigger windows, facilitating the circulation and renewal of air, as well as the entry of sunlight.

Extra care in cleaning the mats

The mat area should be cleaned daily with water and anti-bacterial liquid.
