Belgian Judoka Arrested After Losing Fight with BJJ Receptionist

New details are emerging following the incident that was widely reported as Dirk Van Tichelt being beaten up following robbery.

Independent now reports He was arrested after losing a fight with a jiu-jitsu trained hotel receptionist.

The Olympic bronze medalist in judo reportedly broke into Best Western Hotel in Rio believing that a woman who had allegedly stolen his phone was hiding in there.

He had seen the phone snatching while celebrating on Copacabana Beach just hours after his victory. After chasing the suspect to the hotel he broke in. An anonymous member of the hotel’s staff said:

“The woman tried to get into the hotel but the doors were locked. The athlete didn’t catch the woman but wrongly thought that she had entered our hotel.

“But our doors were already locked so she couldn’t have come in. Even so, he broke the lock on the door and burst in making a lot of noise and making a lot of accusations.”

“He thought that the woman was staying in the hotel and demanded the receptionist should give him her room number so she could return the phone,” the hotel worked added.

“This was all totally untrue. Unfortunately, the Belgian athlete smelled of alcohol and looked very drunk.

“My colleague tried to get the man out of the hotel and this turned into a fight. They exchanged quite a few punches. As it happens the receptionist also practises jiu-jitsu so they were equally matched.”

Police confirmed:

“The athlete attempted to throw a punch at the employee and the employee retaliated.”

Luc Rampaer, Belgium’s Olympic communications director, claimed that Van Tichelt had simply hit by ‘another person’

“The mobile phone of Dirk’s training partner had just been stolen and he ran to try to catch the thief and ended up being hit in the face by another person,” he said.

No wonder the he  wants to draw a line under this matter, he told dhnet.be

“For me the incident is over, now I want to enjoy my new medal,” said the judoka Dirk Van Tichelt the microphone of the Flemish public broadcaster Sporza Tuesday night at the party held to celebrate his bronze medal in less than 73 kilos. “But it is a regrettable matter,” he agreed.

“The Games, it’s magic, and Rio is a beautiful city. It is in the interests not harm neither to one nor the other, I first said he received a blow to drive. for a judoka that does not seem unlikely and therefore my version seemed plausible. But now since we said everything and anything, I am forced to restore the truth. so I was walking on the beach Copacabana with my sparring parter (Matthias Casse, note) who was talking with a girl. He suddenly realized she had stolen his mobile phone and was pursued. But she took refuge in a hotel whose entrance was guarded. My friend tried to force the pass and then a fight broke out. Me, I’ve tried to separate everybody and that’s how I got a call from a security guard . I then went to the police to file a complaint. that’s all there is nothing to add. this is the truth … “
