Are Warm-Ups (Hip Escapes, Running, Pushups…) Useless in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

Warm-ups… You’ve probably done them hundreds and thousands of times. The running, the forward and backward rolls, the Hip Escapes, the pushups and squats; the list goes on and on.
However, are these sorts of warm-ups useful in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu? Do they make sense? Malachy Friedman, a second-degree BJJ black belt, doesn’t think so.

ARE SOME WARM-UPS USELESS IN BJJ?

Friedman shares that he doesn’t implement these forms of warming up in his BJJ classes. The reason? He doesn’t think they make sense for the sport his students train.
He makes a comparison between tennis and running long distances. For example, someone like Serena Williams has no need to be running (neither as a part of her warm-up nor as a part of her general conditioning) marathons. Why? Well, because it doesn’t benefit her nor her sport in any way! The running she probably should do, on the other hand, would probably have to do with short-distance sprints; as they transition better to her sport.

In the same way, Professor Friedman doesn’t make his students do Hip Escapes, running, pushups, nor anything similar for warm-ups. Instead, he tells them to pick a technique they want to drill, and makes them do it for around 5 minutes – and it ends up being enough for the techniques, drills, and rolls that’ll come up ahead.

Malachy Friedman shares more about his opinion on the video below. Do you agree with him?
