Andre Galvao’s Accuser Wins IBJJF World Championship After Leaving Atos

Alexa Hirsch has added another major accomplishment to her rapidly growing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu career, capturing the 2026 IBJJF World Championship at purple belt adult featherweight.

The victory marks her second world title in just three years. Hirsch previously won the IBJJF World Championship at blue belt in 2024. However, this latest achievement carries significance far beyond medals and podiums.

Over the past year, Hirsch has found herself at the center of one of the most discussed controversies in modern Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.

After spending years training at Atos Jiu-Jitsu under Andre Galvao, Hirsch publicly alleged that Galvao had sexually harassed her over an extended period. Galvao has denied wrongdoing. The allegations triggered widespread debate throughout the grappling community and led to significant fallout within one of the sport’s most successful teams.

Several athletes and members of the Atos community publicly took sides as the controversy unfolded. Some remained loyal to Galvao and Atos, while others expressed support for Hirsch and called for greater accountability and athlete protection within Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academies.

Eventually, Hirsch left Atos and began representing Alliance Jiu-Jitsu, historically one of Atos’ biggest rivals. The move immediately became one of the most talked-about team changes in the sport, given both the circumstances surrounding her departure and the long-standing competitive rivalry between the two powerhouse organizations.

Now, less than a year later, Hirsch has reached the top of the podium wearing Alliance colors.

The victory was celebrated by several prominent figures in the BJJ community, including veteran Atos black belt Josh Hinger, who has previously voiced support for Hirsch.

In a lengthy social media post following her victory, Hinger wrote:

“I’m so proud of you. But not because you are a purple belt world champion. I’m proud of you for overcoming a massive amount of BS that you didn’t deserve. You overcame getting backstabbed and slandered by people who claimed to be your friends.”

He continued:

“You stood up and spoke the truth in the face of enormous pressure and manipulation. You stomped on the head of a snake who was filled with lies. You are a huge inspiration to the next generation of little girls that are just now falling in love with jiu-jitsu.”

Meanwhile, Hirsch herself appeared to reference the difficult period she has experienced over the last year in her own championship post, writing:

“Dark days can’t stop bright people.”

The symbolism of this title is difficult to ignore.

Competitive success after changing teams is always noteworthy. Doing so after becoming the central figure in one of the most polarizing controversies the sport has seen in recent years makes the achievement even more significant.

For Alliance, Hirsch’s world title represents another major addition to the organization’s already impressive competitive legacy.

For Hirsch personally, it serves as a powerful reminder that despite the challenges, scrutiny, and division that accompanied her departure from Atos, she has continued to perform at the highest level.

Whether viewed through the lens of competition, resilience, or the broader discussion surrounding athlete welfare in martial arts, Alexa Hirsch’s latest world title will likely be remembered as one of the most talked-about victories of the 2026 IBJJF World Championships.

As one supporter commented beneath her post:

“Dark days can’t stop bright people.”

For Hirsch, those words may now define one of the most important victories of her career.
