One of the greatest BJJ competitors in history has finally retired after a glorious 13 year career. Andre Galvao, co-founder and leader of Atos Jiu-Jitsu, a 5 time ADCC champion & 11 times world BJJ champion announced his decision. Galvao has won everything there is to win in Jiu-Jitsu. Unlike his other Atos teammates Gui and Rafael Mendes who both retired at ages 26 and 27 respectively, Galvao has taken this decision at the ripe age of 35.
Flograppling first announced the news:
“I think this chapter of my life is over. It’s sad, but happy at the same time. Sad because I will need to stop doing what I love most,” said Galvao.
“I have nothing to prove to anyone anymore. It’s hard for an athlete to announce he needs to stop, you’re done, it’s over. I have ideas that I planned for my future, there’s a lot of things going on at this time in my career.”
Galvao now plans to focus his energy on expanding his team Atos, and coaching his numerous world champion students (Keenan Cornelius, Lucas Hulk, Luiza Monteiro, Gustavo Batista etc..).
Will we ever see Galvao on the competition again though? There is a very high chance that we will… This natural born competitor will still stay in in shape he still had to face Felipe Pena in ADCC superfight. There is also a chance that we might see Galvao compete at Mater worlds in the near future. Let’s wait and see.
