Advice For Dating In BJJ: Move Very Slowly & Respect The Situation

If you’ve been training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for long enough, then a thought or two of dating someone from your gym has probably crossed your mind.
However, should you go for it? Should you start dating someone from the same BJJ gym you train at?

The answer is, of course, “it depends”. But here’s one thing that you need to do: you have to respect the situation and move slowly.
Nick “Chewy” Albin explains why this is the case:

Tread lightly and respect the situation. And move very slowly, because what happens is… What I’ve seen in the past is people, like, they get into this relationship with this person who shares the same passion that they have. They’re like: “Hey, you like Jiu-Jitsu? I love Jiu-Jitsu too! And we train together all the time and it’s so much fun!”

And then what happens is they get latched on to that. To that person. And then later on, they start to learn who that person really is and they don’t like it…
Then it creates all kinds of friction and turmoil because you didn’t really get to know the person you got really attached to.

In a sense, you should first get to really know the person, before you try and make anything “official”:

[You got attached] to this idea, this passion that they have and you, you know, started being in a physical relationship with them… You got attached to all that stuff and then eventually you actually got to know who that person is and you realize: “Oh, this is a bad idea.” And then it goes south.

So, you want to make sure you actually know the person before you decide to really lock it in.
