Adding More Power To Your Toe Holds with Garry Tonon

Adding More Power To Your Toe Holds with Garry Tonon

Leg locks were once considered unorthodox and dangerous techniques, but times are changing. In recent years, leg lock systems have become more and more popular in the Jiu-Jitsu world because moves that were once considered dangerous and controversial have entered the sport.

The bad reputation of these attacks has mostly faded, clearing the way for innovators such as Garry Tonon and John Danaher to popularize leg attacks. However, even as these techniques become more and more popular, the reputation of the heel hook as a dangerous attack still exists.

When people are in the Ashi position, they tend to show their heels while reaching for the heels of the opponent. This is especially true when you are near 50/50 or the common Ashi Garami. When they turn to the ground to attack the heels buried under them, their upper legs can slide into a vulnerable position. In these cases, we must first consider toe retention.

Before you watch Garry’s video, try to remember the following (crucial) details that he elaborates on. First of all, when in the Ashi Garami position, you’re supposed to drive your hips into the opponent’s leg, while exerting Toe Hold pressure into the opposite direction. Also, make sure that your knees are above their knee line (so as to prevent them from escaping).

Also, when you grab the opponent’s foot, grab it so that your middle finger crosses over their pinky toe. This is an ideal position, says Garry, and you shouldn’t go lower than it (for the fear of the foot slipping out).
When you’re going for the finish, don’t just push their toes/foot down. This won’t be enough for the submission; you also have to use the other hand (which makes the Kimura Grip) to pull their foot simultaneously. And yes: that second hand should go directly underneath the opponent’s Achilles Tendon. This way, you’ll gain maximum breaking power.

Watch Garry explain and demonstrate these, as well as many other details on the video below:
