If you speak to seasoned Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) practitioners, you’ll find out that they’ve been training for quite some time and intend to grow old with BJJ. After all, it’s a never ending journey of self-improvement, and there are so many different techniques to master! Well, there’s a reason why it takes 10 years to get a black belt. Of course, a great amount of dedication and consistency is required in order to make progress.
Perhaps you’ve just started training BJJ, or have been doing so for awhile – and have faced your fair share of challenges, as well as moments of inspiration on the mats. For those who have made the decision to commit to BJJ, chances are, you’re getting serious about it! And that’s a good thing, because it means that you’ll be getting into the best shape of your life, while equipping yourself with some essential self-defense skills!
Curious about whether you’re getting serious about your training? Then read on. Today, Evolve Daily shares 7 Signs You’re Getting Serious About Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu:
1) You prioritize BJJ over everything else
When it comes to planning your schedule for the week, all your plans basically revolve around your BJJ classes. After all, you want to ensure that you’re getting enough time on the mats! That’s why you tend to plan your BJJ training first, before you even figure out when you’re going out for dinner or catching that new movie with your friends.
2) You think about BJJ whenever you’re off the mats
It doesn’t matter whether you’re lying in bed waiting to fall asleep, you just woke up, or you’re in the train on the way to work. You’ve got one thing on your mind: BJJ. You can’t help it though, because you find that it helps to revise the new technique you learned in that latest class. And sometimes, you even go through the various kinds of scenarios you could face when rolling – what you could do when someone has your back, or how you can pass the half guard. Perhaps you even try to analyze what went wrong during your latest roll, so you can fix all the holes in your game and come back stronger.
3) You would rather train than go for brunch over the weekend
Maybe brunch or sleeping in during the weekend used to be something you spent all week looking forward to. But all that changed when you started training BJJ – because it became your new favorite thing. Your friends might even question why you’d rather spend happy hour at the gym than a pub on a Friday night, because they can’t relate to you. But that’s okay, you get to train and work on becoming a better martial artist – and you just can’t wait to crush all your goals.
4) You’ve been thinking about competing
At some point of your BJJ journey, you probably felt that you’ve progressed and as a result, gained confidence in yourself and your ability to perform on the mats. So you’ve been thinking about putting your skills to the ultimate test – by joining an upcoming competition. Well, the Evolve Competition Team is holding tryouts this month, so why not take the next step towards your dream!
5) You take better care of yourself
From sleeping early to munching on healthy food and chugging down 8 glasses of water daily, you’re doing everything you can to treat your body with the care and respect it deserves. After all, it is both your armor and weapon in BJJ, and if you don’t take good care of it, you wouldn’t be able to perform at your best every time you roll.
6) You’d rather shop for gis than other clothes
This sign is one of the most visible ones. After all, you’d be greeted by all your gis the moment you open your closet! Chances are, you’ve been investing in gis rather than other clothes because you feel that you need them more, due to the fact that you train as often as you can. Of course, it also helps to look and feel good while you’re on the mats!
7) You binge watch BJJ videos instead of TV shows
Before you started training BJJ, you might have been guilty of binge watching your favorite TV shows. But now, because you want to improve as much as you can, you make it a point to watch as many BJJ videos as you can in your spare time – and this probably excites you more than Stranger Things. Well, at least it would help you keep tabs on the latest techniques and play a part in elevating your game!
