A lot of people who aren’t involved in combat sports or martial arts don’t understand the difference between Wrestling and Judo. But there are some very big differences that can make or break a Wrestler’s experience in sport Judo.

The first one is posture. Freestyle Wrestlers tend to use a lower stance where the shoulder is as close as possible to the knee. This is done in order to block shots.

Judo has a much more upright stance, since there are no leg grabs and shots in judo, you don’t need to protect the legs like you do in Freestyle Wrestling.

The second is using static strength vs explosive strength. In Judo you’re constantly pulling with the Uchikomis, that’s why explosive strength is more important in Judo than in Wrestling.

The third one is focusing on the head level vs focusing where the hips are at. In Wrestling, matching your opponent’s head level is very important, because it’s how you block their shots, how you develop your whole takedown defense.
