2016 Worlds Preview: Buchecha’s Return, Faria & Lo’s Legacy

 

The yearly IBJJF world championships will once again be held between the 1st and 5th of June, in Long Beach California. The competition will feature the biggest stars of our sport, especially the return of 3 x absolute world champion Marcus Buchecha , who returns to the mats after recovering from serious knee injury.

The Worlds will also include other big names of the sport, such as Bruno Malfacine , Caio Terra , the Miyao brothers, Rubens Charles Cobrinha , Rafael Mendes , Claudio Calasans , Leandro Lo , Keenan Cornelius , Romulo Barral , Andre Galvao , Felipe Preguica , Leo Nogueira , Bernardo Faria , Alexander Trans , Roberto Cyborg , among other top players. In the womens, Gezary Matuda , Michelle Nicolini , Mackenzie Dern , Bia Mesquita , Monique Elias , Luiza Monteiro , Andresa Correa – who will seek the Grand Slam after winning the gold medals weight / absolute in the European, Pan American and Brazilian – Fernanda Mazzelli and Dominyka Obelenyte will also guarantee a great show to the Jiu-Jitsu fans.

Check out the highlights in the adult black belt:

Male:

Rooster: Bruno Malfacine, Caio Terra, Joao Miyao, Tiago Barros and Koji Shibamoto.

Prediction: The two favourites Malfacine and Terra are on opposite sides of the bracket. The semi final should be Terra vs Miyao. This will be the first time that Terra meets a Miyao. Final will be Malfacine vs Miyao with Miyao winning it at last after coming short for the past two years.

Light Featherweight: Isaac Doederlein, Hiago George, Ary Farias, Mikey Musumeci, Paulo Miyao, Luis Felipe Pinto, Daniel Beleza.

2015 champion Paulo Miyao is on one side of the bracket and on the other side of the bracket, favourites are Ary Farias, Gabriel Moraes and Gianni Grippo. Final will be Miyao vs Farias with a win for Miyao.

Featherweight: Rubens Charles Cobrinha, Gianni Grippo, Osvaldo Moizinho, Samir Chantre Dahas, Rafael Mendes, Bruno Frazatto, Gabriel Marangoni, Marcio André and Isaac Paiva.

Favourites Rafael Mendes and Rubens Cobrinha are on each sides of the brackets.It will be very hard not to bet in those 2 meeting again. For the past 6 years, only Augusto Tanquinho has been in the final. These 2 legends have faced each other 5 times. Rafa is looking in tremendous shape and will win this one again.

Lightweight: Lucas Lepri, Michael Langhi, Juan Kamezawa, JT Torres, Roberto Satoshi, Michael Liera Jr., Gabriel Rollo, AJ Agazarm, Edwin Najmi Mansher Khera, Francisco Iturralde and Caio Almeida

There are so may killers in this division. The favourites Michael Langhi and Lucas Lepri are on each sides of the bracket. Final will be Edwin Najmi vs Lepri with Lepri taking the win once again.

Middleweight: Dillon Danis, Jonathan Satava, Claudio Calasans, Lucas Leite, Jaime Canuto, Victor Silverio, Otavio Sousa, Gabriel Arges, Victor Estima, Yago Souza and Celso Vinicius.,

This division is absolutely stacked! There are 4 brackets which are lead by Otavio Sousa, Alan Nascimento, Claudio Calasans, Victor Estima. The final should be another Sousa vs Calasans war.

Middle heavy: Matheus Diniz, Renato Cardoso, Keenan Cornelius, Lucas Hulk, Patrick Gaudio, Romulo Barral, Leandro Lo, Gregor Gracie, Murilo Santana, and Guto Campos

Leandro Lo and Romulo Barral are opposite sides of the brackets. Final will be a remake of the pan with Lo once again beating Romulo.

Heavyweight: Dimitrius Souza, Andre Galvao, Jackson Sousa, Felipe Pena, Lucas Rocha, Cassius Francis, and Erberth Santos

André Galvão and Felipe Preguica are on opposite side of the brackets. Challengers are Jackson Sousa and Erberth Santos. This will be another Galvao vs Preguica final with Preguica taking it.

Superheavy weight: Léo Nogueira, Bernardo Faria, Alex Ceconi, Luiz Panza, Igor Silva, Lucio Lagarto and Rodrigo Cavaca.

Bernardo Faria and Leo Nogueira are opposite side of brackets. Challengers are Alessandro Cecconi, Igor Silva, and Rodrigo Cavaca who has cut weight, Lucio lagarto, Guybson Sá and Luiz Panza. The final will be between Faria and Panza with Faria taking it.

Ultra heavyweight: Gabriel Lyrio, Marcus Buchecha, Roberto Cyborg, Alex Trans, Ricardo Evangelista, Otavio Nalati, Mohamed Aly, João Gabriel Rocha and Gabriel Fedor.

Team mates Gabriel Fedor and Marcus Buchecha are on opposite sides.  Challengers are Mahamed Aly, Roberto Cyborg, Ricardo Evangelista, Alex Trans, João Gabriel Rocha. Buchecha hasn’t competed on 1 year and this could be his last BJJ competition before moving to MMA. Final: Ricardo Evangelista vs Alexander Trans.
