Rare Footage: Brock Lesnar’s ‘Wheel of Death’ Move in 2000 NCAA Wrestling Semis

Ex UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar has an amazing wrestling pedigree.

He attended Webster High School, where he had a wrestling record of 33–0–0 in his senior year. He then attended Bismarck State College, where he would win the National Junior college wrestling championship during his sophomore year. He transferred to the University of Minnesota on a full wrestling scholarship for his junior and senior years of college. There, he was roommates with fellow wrestler Shelton Benjamin, who served as his assistant coach.

Lesnar won the 2000 NCAA Division I heavyweight wrestling championship his senior year after being the runner-up the year prior. He finished his amateur career as a two-time NJCAA All-American, 1998 NJCAA Heavyweight Champion, two-time NCAA All-American, two-time Big Ten Conference Champion, and the 2000 NCAA heavyweight champion with a record of 106–5 overall in four years of college.

In this rare video, Lesnar demonstrates his extreme athleticism in the semis of NCAA in 2000. His opponent shoots a head-inside single to his right, and the offensive attempt initiates a poor defensive scramble from Lesnar which culminates in what appears to be a cartwheel. As Lesnar’s tumble finishes it’s rotation, he plants his opponent on his back with a half nelson. With this crazy move, Lesnar would earn a victory by fall, and a spot in his second NCAA finals, where he would end up becoming a national champion.

Fans would later refer to this cartheel-like maneuver as “the wheel of death”, and even to this day stands as one of the most memorable scrambles in modern wrestling.
