The Awkwardness of Training with the New Guy in BJJ Class

Welcome to the world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, where the mats are sweaty, the gis are crisp, and the newbies are… well, hilariously clueless.

It’s just another day at the dojo, and our seasoned instructor is ready to impart the sacred art of the tripod sweep. He confidently demonstrates the move, emphasizing the crucial step: “Grab the sleeves, put the hip, press, pass, and finish with the choke.” Sounds simple, right? Not so fast!

Enter our enthusiastic newbie, bright-eyed and bushy-tailed, ready to take on the world of BJJ. He’s keen, he’s eager, and he’s… utterly baffled. As the instructor patiently explains the importance of grabbing the sleeves, our hero of the hour seems to have his own unique interpretation. Sleeves? Aren’t those the things you blow your nose with?

“No, no, you’re going to grab the sleeves with your hands,” the instructor repeats, a hint of a smile tugging at the corners of his mouth. The newbie nods, a light bulb flickering in his head. He lunges forward, and for a moment, there’s hope. But alas, he’s now attempting a Sayo Nage, a move that’s definitely not on the menu for today’s class.

The instructor, a saint in human form, tries again. “These are the sleeves,” he points out, as if revealing the secrets of the universe. The newbie squints, tilts his head, and you can almost hear the cogs turning in his brain. This time, he gets it! Or does he? In a surprising twist, he starts discussing Muay Thai, a martial art that’s not even taught on Wednesday nights!

The class watches in a mix of amusement and disbelief. Will our newbie ever master the art of the sleeve grab? Only time will tell. But one thing’s for sure – in the world of BJJ, every day is an adventure, especially when you’re training with the new guy!
