Allan Goes: ‘Carlson Trained His Fighters to Defeat Helio’s Side of the Family’

Allan Góes is a retired Brazilian mixed martial artist. He last fought for the Seattle Tiger Sharks of the International Fight League.

Goes started practicing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu at the age of 7 in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil with his grandfather Alcides Goes, Judo Master. When he was 12 he was taken to the Carlson Gracie Team and fell in love with the sport embracing Jiu-Jitsu as a profession, totally dedicating himself to the “Gentle Art”.

At the age of 18, he got his black belt from the hands of Carlson Gracie. At 19, after more than 200 Jiu-Jitsu fights and only one loss, and achieving World Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Champion 8 times he then moved to the United States to become a professional MMA Fighter. In the year of 2000 with his old team partners, he helped create a new Team, called Brazilian Top Team. Allan Goes did more than 30 professional fights and he is also a Pancrase, Ultimate Fighting Championships and PRIDE Fighting Championships Veteran, and made his comeback on the IFL on September 9, 2006.

Today, Black Belt Master 6th Dan, Allan Goes is known as one of the most technical fighters and has created his own system to teach Jiu-Jitsu.

Goes teaches at his Gym, Allan Goes Martial Arts, in Mission Viejo, California.

Stuart Cooper recently interviewed Goes, who talked about the feud between Helio and his nephew Carlson. Goes talks about the fact that Helio was against Carlson’s decision to teach Jiu-Jitsu to common people. As a reaction, Carlson said that he would train his fighters to defeat Helio’s sons. The famous Wallid Ismail vs Royce Gracie match was the most famous example.

This old (early 2000’s) Interview of Carlson Gracie Senior from O TATAME Magazine: Interview with C a r l s o n G r a c i e “L i v i n g L e g e n d” Translated by: T a t i a n a S a n t o s (Asst. to Mr. C a r l s o n G r a c i e).

Carlson senior goes into detail about what sets the Carlson Gracie style apart from other members of the Gracie family:

T: What’s the reason for your disagreement with Helio Gracie?
CG: I have nothing against him, the only problem is that he’s going around telling lies, you know what I mean? He goes around saying that his sons are the biggest & best fighters in the world and that they discovered the invincibility. His students lose everything here in Brazil. OK, Royce did well in the U.S. He beat everyone there, but no one knew anything then. Here in Brazil, I’ve never seen Royce win ONE championship. He lost to everyone. He lost to De La Riva, who was so much smaller than him. He tapped out to Paschoal. He’s a good fighter, but never won anything here. He’s not this “phenomenon” that they talk about.
