7 Takedowns For a BJJ Player To Do on a Judo Player

For a BJJ player, taking down a Judo player is not an easy task. Chances are, they are as good on their feet as you are good on the ground. Most BJJ players resolve to pulling guard in desperation.

When facing a Judoka, do not panic. You need to break their grips, establish your dominant grips or set up takedowns which they may not be used to defending because of recent Judo rules change, such as the morote gari (double leg takedown) or a single leg, low single or ankle picks.

Multiple Australian and Oceania Champion and a 2008 Beijing Judo Olympian Matt D’Aquino gives some excellent advice in the following video.

He has been studying Judo for over 27 years. He is a 3rd Degree Black belt and a black belt in BJJ. Matt is also known worldwide for his excellent website Beyondgrappling.com . Matt suggests the following combinations all coming from his grip break:

1. Morote Gari (double leg)
2. Tani Otoshi
3. Tani Otoshi Variation with ankle pick
4. Bear hug takedown
5. Low ankle pick
6. Foot sweep into ankle pick
7. Foot sweep

Matt D’Aquino is a world-renowned Judo coach, 2008 Olympian, 4th degree Judo Black belt and Competitive BJJ Black Belt.
