Cyborg: Heart Problem Cause of Bad Performance in Superfight

At the ADCC 2015 superfight, Andre Galvao defeated the much bigger Roberto ‘Cyborg’ Abreu in a exciting match. Galvao was the more aggressive fighter, passing Cyborg’s dangerous guard, and even taking his back twice, eventually winning 6-0 on points.

Cyborg had a great camp coming in, with amazing sparring partners such as Rodolfo Vieira (2015 ADCC -99kg champion), Joao Rocha (2015 ADCC open weight silver medallist), and Abraham Marte. However, Cyborg looked very slow in this superfight which is different than his usual dynamic style of Jiu-Jitsu. He came into the fight looking very big, as a result of his intense lifting routine and Galvao was able to use his superior speed to outmanoeuvre him. Some fans were even wondering if Cyborg was sick.

You can watch the entire match in HD on the BudoVideos’ online stream of the event.

A very disappointed Cyborg wrote on his Facebook page:

I want to thank the love and support of all. I prepared myself to fight like I never prepared myself before. I believe that everything happens for a reason. Unfortunately I have a heart problem that happens from time to time called tachycardia and unfortunately happened before the fight. I had tachycardia warming Up for the fight and i could not recover in time. IM not taking at all the merits of Andre as he is a great athlete and fought hard. But unfortunately I could not fight this time. I am saddened by the feeling of helplessness of not having what to do, and I have not been able to represent myself. Im sorry for today! ???? I’ll keep working hard and I’ll be back! Thanks to All.
