Newly released New Mexico State Police dashcam video shows the moments when a man lead police on a car chase through miles of the northern mountains, then used martial arts training to take down an officer.

According to krqe.com,  “The man, 27-year-old Shae Russell Nakai Blair was later arrested on a list of charges including battery of a peace officer, DWI, resisting arrest and more. But his arrest came nearly an hour after the chase began.

The incident happened just before 7 p.m. on March 31, 2014. State police officer Todd Sibley began chasing Blair after clocking his black BMW going 93 miles-per-hour on Highway 68, south of Taos.

The video shows that for around 15 minutes, Blair wouldn’t stop. Blair lead the officer through small highway roads around dozens of cars, through narrow bridges and gravel roads. Eventually, Blair pulled over on the side of the road in a large open area.

Video shows Officer Sibley pull his car behind Blair’s only to find him already standing outside of the vehicle.

With his gun drawn, the officer can be seen in the video walking over to Blair to attempt to arrest him. However, video shows the two got in a scuffle and tumbled off screen.

According to a criminal complaint, Blair took the officer down, holding his head to the ground and saying, “If you want to grapple, I know jiu-jitsu.”

The complaint states that Officer Sibley then calmed Blair down, telling him, “Relax and let’s talk about what has happened.” The officer stated he could smell alcohol on Blair’s breath and saw open beer inside of his car.

After a few minutes, video shows Officer Sibley and Blair got up and walked back to the roadside, but quickly Blair continued walking to his car. Sipley drew his gun again, but Blair got in his car and drove off.

Over the radio the officer called out, “Hey, use caution, he does know jiu-jitsu.”

The chase continued for another couple minutes before Blair pulled over again but refused the officer’s command to “get on the ground.” Video shows Blair ran off on foot.

State Police eventually found Blair hiding under a tree and he was arrested. Blair never told police why he ran but they did discover he had several outstanding warrants including one for identity theft, fraud and forgery.

Blair is now also facing a long-list of charges for the car chase.

KRQE News 13 reached out to New Mexico State Police on Wednesday for comment but did not hear back. The officer involved is said to be OK.”
