The excellent Brazilian MMA and Jiu-Jitsu magazine Tatame has made an article in their November edition about the phenomenom that is killing Jiu-Jitsu: The loss of value of the BJJ black belt…This includes online belts, buying belts etc. The subject, resurfaced after Daniel Cormier “jumped” to a brown belt when he was promoted by Checkmat’s Leandro Vieira, but this is just the tip of the iceberg, as they cover in the pages of the publication.

This is what Leandro Vieira had to say about Cormier’s Jiu-Jitsu in an interview with Graciemag:

Daniel has an enviable track record in wrestling, which facilitated his evolution in Jiu-Jitsu. Few know his career, but the guy was fourth in the Olympics in Athens, he was captain of the U.S. team wrestling in Beijing, and has medaled twice at the Pan In my view, analyzing his daily practice for two years, the Brown belt was the most suitable for the technical level of Cormier.

Cormier was promoted straight to brown belt by Leandro Vieira froim Checkmat.
