Copa Podio Set To Penalize The Lapel Guard In Their Events

The organizers of Brazil’s very popular professional BJJ event the Copa Podio will be releasing in the next few days a new set of  rules changes for their events. One of the changes will be a penalty for use of the controversial ‘lapel guard’. This position is seen by some as a stalling position as it is very difficult to break the grip once it is placed on the lapel.

Metamoris 2 had this problem with the 20 mins fight between Braulio Estima and Rodolfo Vieira which was mostly spent in this blocked guard position (apart from the last five minutes)

Copa Podio anounced today (Tuesday) on their Facebook page:

“IN THE NAME OF SHOW] The organization of the Copa Podio will release in the coming days some changes in the rules for their events. One is the penalty for the lapel guard, a position that is very much in evidence in the current competitions.

“In traditional events where the title and the medal are more important than the show, the lapel guard and several other positions are so successful, says Jeferson mayca, the director of the organization. In traditional jiu-jitsu competitions many are winning the title, even with an ugly fight but their titles generate the seminars which are still the major source of income of the fighters. The show is secondary in these cases but this has never been the idea for a professional event such as Copa Podio, precisely because there are already major events for this purpose ”

Other important changes will be posted in the coming days.”
