Maynard James Keenan is the latest cool guest who Joe Rogan managed to get on the podcast. The podcast starts on a bjj note:
“So if you want a place to train, you should just buy a gym. That’s the move, right? Otherwise you have to drive.”
This set the tone for the much of the remaining interview. Way back in 2015 he was promoted to purple belt.
Maynard James Keenan is a singer, songwriter, producer, winemaker, and actor, best known as the vocalist for Grammy Award-winning rock band Tool, Puscifer, and A Perfect Circle. And he just had a book published called “A Perfect Union of Contrary Things” .
On what attracted him to bjj:
JR: “I think doing difficult things is good. I think this is one of the reasons you’re so drawn to jiu-jitsu. ”
JMK: It’s the hardest thing I’ve ever done in my life. It’s the hardest. It’s the most… I’m getting snowflakey weepy. It’s not something that you are handed. You have to do the work to get it. And I had so many injuries over the years. So much distance from this thing and I’m such a stubborn pr*ck that I have – I’ve started the thing and I’m gonna finish this thing. So that’s where i’m at with jiu-jitsu. And it’s not something that you can be handed.”
Later he added ” I’m just chipping away at that purple belt. “
Which had some odd notes. At one point Maynard was a little stunned watching famed podcast host/comedian explain and do hindu squats
