10 Things Jiu-Jitsu Has Taught Me About Life, Failure & Success

10 Things Jiu-Jitsu Has Taught Me About Life, Failure & Success

Some things are worth fighting for. Some are not. Like grips. Some are worth fighting for and some are not. If it’s worth having then it’s worth fighting for. If it’s worth fighting for then give it all you’ve got. If it’s not worth having, let it go. Another opportunity will come along. Learn to tell the difference between what’s worth having (fighting for) and what’s not.

Preserve your partners. Good partners are the only way to get better. Those who are willing to share this journey with you are rare. If you hurt them, harm them, or injure them, then you are never going to get any better. By making your partners better, you make yourself better.

There is no such thing as fair. There is no such thing as unfair. Where you are is where you are Maybe it was your fault. Maybe it wasn’t. Don’t waste effort seeking vindication when you should be spending that effort escaping the position.

Behavior leads to outcome. When you do something wrong you experience consequences. When you do it right, you experience benefits. Doing it right is hard. Doing it wrong is easy.

If it’s not working, try something different. When you keep getting caught by the same thing over and over again, then it’s time for a change. If you insist on doing the same thing, then try doing it right.

Failure is always an option. But it’s not the end. In fact, it’s just the beginning.Nobody gets better without failing.

Ask for help. There’s no way to know everything on your own. Everyone has something to offer. Learn from them.

You are better today than you were yesterday. Today is the place where everything you’ve learned comes together.

The best way to get better is to show up. You have to be present.

Be in the moment. Don’t worry about what has happened or what might happen. Worry about what’s right in front of you. The technique you force probably isn’t the one you want.
