Fightinglifestyleuae.com‘s Rick Rout caught up with Team Nogueira Dubai’s Head Coach Rafael Haubert ahead of the World Professional Jiu-jitsu Championship. Rafael Haubert who is a world champion and a black belt under the legendary Mario Sperry talk about his Jiu-jitsu journey and how he came to build a strong friendship with the Nogueira brothers and H.E Sheikh Tariq Al Qassimi which in turn led to the creation of Team Nogueira Dubai.

“Well I started Jiujitsu in 1995, when Mario Sperry came to the South of Brazil to open the first Brazilian Jiu-jitsu academy. At the time one of my friends invited me to come and check it out, so from the day I came to that school I started training Jiu-jitsu. I started training in 1995 and at the end of 2003 I got my Black Belt.”

Haubert who is also one of the first BJJ black belts to introduce Jiu-jitsu in Spain added:

“I arrived in Barcelona in June of 2004, it was a bit of a hard time as jiu-jitsu had just started growing in Europe, but was exciting and was a big challenge. We have a school there till today and it is about to complete 11 years and is one of the oldest schools in Barcelona. It was an exiting time in Europe at the time.”
