Tayane Porfirio on Weight Critics: “They Don’t Worry Me!”

Tayane Porfirio is definitely hitting a stride. Less then a year after being awarded her black belt she’s secured the double gold at the European Championships.

Still there’s plenty of people willing to critique her on looks alone. While the Adult Heavy division for females ranges upto 79.3 kg Tayane’s Heavy division has no weight limit! She’s been previously known to walk around even over 130!

One way or another she seems to be content with the Gabi Garcia comparisons.

As she told Tatame:

At weight I’m fine. I’m not worrying about criticism anymore … They’ll always talk. This title I dedicate to my father. A week before embarking for Lisbon, he was hospitalized and discharged these days, and I also dedicated to a special person that I lost yesterday (last Saturday, 21st). Now it’s just happiness (laughs).

Two weeks prior she posted this short snippet mocking critics

Eu não posso nem usar uma mini saia com um top sem parecer uma porca gorda, que HORROOOOOOOOR ??#??????

And this was a first Europeans for her as a black belt. She commented the new ranking might’ve contributed a bit to the nervousness:

It was not the first competition fighting as a black belt, I participated in others, but the European is the first. The difference (in relation to the previous tracks) is you fight in the middle and everyone is there looking at you. I think this adds to the nervousness (laughs).

Porfirio managed to slide by in absolute finals and win the gold by advantage against the much smaller Bia Mesquita:

In fact, I believe that all the fights were difficult, but I think in this final (of the absolute) with Bia Mesquita, I had to hold the game more. Any detail there that I did wrong would hurt me.

My heart is a thousand right now. I am so happy to have won the gold in my weight and also in the absolute. I think the feeling is of happiness and fulfillment for the achievement of more important titles.

Still weight loss is not a non factor given that the UAEJJF had a max weight limit implemented last year.

“The directive limits the ultra-heavyweights divisions to 110kg for males and 90kg for females because they feel that the lack of limitations upto this point significantly contribute to the amount of injuries to the smaller competitors particularly in absolute divisions.”

It’s worth mentioning that Porfirio’s walking around weight prior to this directive was a bit over 130kg but she seems to be holding things closer to her west lately!
