Rickson Gracie’s Method For Facing Your Fears

Claustrophobia is the fear of being enclosed in a small space or room and having no escape. It can be triggered by many situations or stimuli, including elevators crowded to capacity, windowless rooms, and even tight-necked clothing. It is typically classified as an anxiety disorder, which often results in panic attacks. The onset of claustrophobia has been attributed to many factors, including a reduction in the size of the amygdala, classical conditioning, or a genetic predisposition to fear small spaces.

One study indicates that anywhere from 5–7% of the world population is affected by severe claustrophobia, but only a small percentage of these people receive some kind of treatment for the disorder. (Source wiki).

Face your fears:

Learn from the Masters: Master Rickson Gracie.

I have another story that Master Rickson Gracie shared with me and I thought I would share it.

He was saying how he use to be very claustrophobic and hated being pinned. He told me that to conquer this fear he would have his brother roll him up in a carpet. He could stay in there for only a minute or so at first. Then slowly he could stay longer and longer.

He kept doing this everyday until he beat his fear and could stay rolled up in the carpet for as long as he wanted to. He learned to breath through it and thus it became comfortable. He never feared being pinned or put in any awkward positions again in Jiujitsu.
