Mauricio Gomes On How He Raised Roger Gracie To Be A Champion

Mauricio Motta Gomes is one of the 6 figures to be promoted to the rank of bjj black belt by the legend Rolles Gracie whose life was cut short in a tragic accident.

Rolles Gracie was always seen as a visionary and wasn’t afraid to branch out outside of bjj in hopes of becoming the best possible grappler.

From such a strong line it’s no surprise Roger Gracie is perhaps the greatest of all time. However nobody is born a great, a great deal of work goes into it –

“The truth is you can give the incentive you want, have your child repeat whatever position, but if he does not like to train Jiu-Jitsu, you can’t do anything,” said the master. “The main thing then is not to charge, but to take it little by little to have fun with that.”

Maurizio told graciemag , “What I did with Roger was playing all the time: we were always piling up; I would finish him around the house. Until one day when he had grown up and got me a mother-of-a-b*tch keylock, and I did not want to tap. I did not get my hand on the floor for a year! [Laughter.] But the father has to take it lightly. Roger, in his 10 years, hated to go and train; Kept repeating to the others: ‘I hate this crap, I only go to the gym because my father makes me.’ He gave what he gave. “
